Steven E. Yochum, PhD, PE

Steven is a hydrologist, civil engineer, fine art photographer, and adventurer.

As a hydrologist and engineer, his expertise is in flood hydrology, hydrologic modeling, stream mechanics and fluvial geomorphology, and stream restoration. He consults on stream-related issues across the United States, working for over 30 years as a practitioner and researcher for the US Forest Service, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the US Geological Survey, other federal and state agencies, and private consulting. Steven was granted a doctorate in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University in 2010, with a dissertation focused on flow resistance in high-gradient streams. He was a returning adult student for his PhD studies, after spending a decade working as a practitioner. He specializes in developing publications and tools that straddle academia and practice, to move science and technology forward for the benefit of society and the environment.

As a photographer, Steven avoids the screen time that dominates his work as a hydrologist by continuing to work with primarily black & white film, printing in a darkroom on fiber paper, with selenium toning, using methods common for most of the last century. Images are honest representations of reality, printed to last a lifetime.

The adventures Steven has pursued include caving, bungee jumping, climbing, camping, backpacking, mountaineering, skiing, canoeing, snorkeling, and sailing. These experiences started in Pittsburgh, PA with a bungee jumping company (Bungee Express!) his friends owned and ran in the early 1990’s, that then blossomed into a lifetime of adventurous experiences blended together with intellectual and artistic pursuits.

Steven, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina (2021-8)
